Bail refused for former East Provincial Secretary

Colombo Additional Magistrate Friday refused bail for Mr.L.S.C.Siriwardene, former East Provincial Education Secretary who is on remand in connection with allegedly accepting bribe of fifty thousand rupees from a volunteer teacher to give permanent appointment. The suspect was ordered further two week's remand.
A team of officials of Bribery and Corruption Commission came from Colombo arrested him two weeks ago in his office in Trincomalee while in the act of allegedly committing the offence. Mr.V.Ramakamalan, Trincomalee Magistrate ordered remand for the suspect till April 24 when he was produced in the first instant and directed the Bribery and Corruption Commission officials to produce him in the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on that date. But a bail application filed on behalf of the suspect came up for inquiry on Friday before Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Thilakaretna. Bribery and Corruption Commission officials appeared in court and objected to release the suspect on bail. The prosecution further submitted to court that the suspect was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, legal sources said. The Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered further two week's remand for the suspect.
