A young fisherman was arrested in Jaffna yesterday and two former United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians are to join the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) today.
Youth arrestedThe Sri Lankan navy (SLN) arrested a young fisherman in Kurunakar in Jaffna yesterday after noon at around 2.00 p.m. The youth, Rasenthiram Amaleswaran, 20, was arrested following the SLN found the special permission, they had previously issued allowing him to catch fish, near their sentry post. Sources in Jaffna said the youth had lost his permission two months ago and received his fishing permission from a fishermen welfare association.
UNP looses Muslim membersTwo former United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians, belonging to the Muslim Community, will join the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) today along with 500 other Muslims, said SLMC sources. Ex- parliamentarians have blamed the UNP for ignoring the interests of the Muslim community in the Amparai district. They will meet the SLMC leader Ashraf at his residence in Colombo and ceremonially join the party the sources added.
