A fisherman was killed in the Jaffna lagoon within the perimeters of Jaffna Municipality when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers fired artillery from the shores towards waters of the lagoon, sources in Jaffna said. The incident happened soon after SLA relaxed fishing along Paashaiyoor and Columbuthurai, and allowed fishermen to use paddle boats to go fishing in the lagoon. Gurunagar ban was not lifted.
Rasappu Yogendran, 52, who was killed in the SLA fire is a father of three children. An associate of Yogendran in fishing in the same boat narrowly escaped injuries. Following the firefight between the Sea Tigers and the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) ten days ago when several fishermen escaped injuries, SLN imposed fishing ban in the coastal villages in the southern peninsula. The fishing ban continues in the Gurunagar area.
