2 civilians shot dead in Batticaloa

Unidentified gunmen killed two civilians in ka'luvaagnchikkudi and Ea’raavoor police divisions Monday night, sources in Batticaloa District said.

Masked armed men shot dead Poopalapillai Chelvanayagam, 52, a labourer and father of four children, outside his residence in Sooriyapuram, kaluvaagnchikkudi, at 7:05 p.m. and then fled the scene.

The body was recovered by ka'luvaagnchikkudi police.

In another incident in Koralankerni district, Ea'ravoor around 7:30 p.m. unidentified gunmen shot dead Mammangam Rasakumar, 30, an internally displaced person (IDP) employed as a shop assistant. The body was recovered by Ea’raavoor police.

The bodies were returned to relatives after postmortem examinations in local hospitals. Eravoor police have commenced investigation into the killing.

Ka'luvaagnchikkudi is located 24 km South of Batticaloa and Ka'luvankea'ni located 17 km North East of Batticaloa.
