The army opened fire on two fishermen in the Pannai lagoon by the Jaffna town this morning around 10 a.m. killing one. The other, according to a report, escaped with injuries but is yet to appear before the Jaffna coroner or the Sri Lankan Police to testify about the death of his colleague.
The dead fisherman was identified by his family at the Jaffna hospital as Kathiravelu Nagenthiram, 42, of Saavakkaadu in Aanaikkottai. The army had stipulated strict conditions on fishing in the Jaffna lagoon following intelligence reports that the Liberation Tigers could come over the eastern sector of the lagoon to mount an attack on Jaffna town. Meanwhile, the army released the three fishermen from Manalkaadu who were arrested on October 22.
