Journalist remembered in Ki'linochchi

The third year anniversary of the prominent Tamil journalist Aiyathurai Nadesan alias G. Nadesan was held in Ki'linochchi around 3:00 p.m. Thursday. The event held at the Media Centre, Ki'linochchi, was organized by the Tamil Eelam Media Wing. Thaya Master, the Head of the Tamil Eelam Media Wing, lit the flame of remembrance.

G. Nadesan, a veteran columnist and a reporter for the leading Tamil newspaper in Sri Lanka, Virakesari, and the reporter for IBC radio based in London, was shot dead by Iniyabharathi, a paramilitary belonging to the Karuna Group.

Nadesan was shot on 31 May 2004 around 8:00 a.m., while he was riding a motorbike along the Boundary road, Batticaloa where he had his office.

Iniyabharathi and one of his assistants waited a few meters away from Nadesan's office which was guarded by Police around the clock.

Nadesan was very critical of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and paramilitary groups in his widely read political column in the Sunday edition of the Virakesari.

Nadesan was born in Nelliyadi, a town 25 km northeast of Jaffna town, and won the NorthEast Sahithya Academy award for his book "History of Ethnic Strife," written in Tamil. He also won the best Tamil journalist award in 2000 awarded by the Editor's Guild, Sri Lanka every year.
