Moothoor Tamil youths file FR petitions in Supreme Court

Six Tamil youths, five from Moothoor and one from Trincomalee town in Trincomalee district currently detained in the Boosa detention centre in Galle district in southern province under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) Friday filed separate fundamental rights applications in the Sri Lanka's Supreme Court, legal sources said.

Petitioners Navaretnarajah Yogeswaran, Rajappu Anburasa, Kirubairasa Moses, Kirubairasa Mohan, Jeyaseelan Pathmaseelan have cited the Officer-in-Charge of Moothoor Police, Inspector General of Police, OIC, Boosa detention centre and Attorney General as respondents. Dunstan Kisok of Trincomalee has cited OIC of Trincomalee Police IGP, OIC, Boosa detention centre and Attorney General as respondents.

Moothoor youths have stated in their applications that they were displaced from their own village Iruthayapuram in August 1996 due to violence. They were resettled in their village last year after ten years living elsewhere as refugees. They were arrested soon after their resettlement. Police did not give the reason for their arrest. The police forced them to sign documents prepared in Sinhala language. Trincomalee youth has stated in his petition that the police arrested him when he was working in a non-governmental organization.

All the petitioners have begged the court to order for their immediate release and compensation to each 200,000/=.
