Jaffna priest detained

Human Rights Commission (HRC) officials in Jaffna who went looking for the priest of the Selvachannithy temple, reported missing after he was arrested by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) on October 16, found him yesterday at the detention centre in the Kankesanthurai (KKS) SLA base complex.
The priest, Kandasamy Iyer Ulahakurunatha Iyer, is under investigation for links with the Liberation Tigers, the Police unit interrogating him told the Human Rights Officials who visited the detention centre yesterday. Sources said that the SLA had arrested him on information that he had given money to the Tigers. The HRC began inquiries about the priest after his wife lodged a complaint that he had gone missing after he was arrested by the SLA on October 16. Meanwhile, Police sources said that six Jaffna youth who had been held at the (KKS) detention centre were sent to Anuradhapura today for further investigations.
