The Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC) has directed its district branch staff and volunteers to use only SLRC vehicles for travel to and from Colombo for official visits, and not to use private vehicles and trains. The directive has come into effect immediately, SLRC sources in Colombo said.
Mr.Neville Nanayakkara, Director General of the SLRC has sent this circular to all SLRC branches in the country following the abduction and murder of two volunteers of SLRC Batticaloa district branch in Colombo last week. Unidentified men abducted two SLRC volunteers while they were waiting at Fort Railway Station to return to Batticaloa having attended a workshop in Colombo. Later the bodies of these volunteers were found thrown into the jungle at Ratnapura with gunshot injuries.
