Relief supply cuts provoke demonstrations

Thousands of displaced people demonstrated in Puthukudiyeruppu, Mullaitivu district, today, against the Sri Lankan Government's cut on relief supplies, said sources.
Demonstrations which began at three different palaces, Karathuraippattu, Oddusudan and Visuvamadu, converged at a junction and marched towards the Kachcheri premises. The demonstrators shouted slogans angrily and carried banners condemning the actions of the government. Demonstrators assembled opposite the office of the Government Agent (GA) of Mullaitivu where a public meeting was held. Leaders of the NGO Consortium and religious leaders of Hindus and Christians addressed the gathering. Subramaniam Somasundaram, one of the organizers of the protest and signature campaign, handed a memorandum addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, to R.Tharmakulasingam the GA of the district.
