Court orders remand for 24 suspects under ER

The Colombo Additional Magistrate Friday ordered further remand till August 03 when 20 Tamils and 04 Sinhalese were produced in court. The suspects were arrested by the police under the Emergency Regulations (ER) on allegation that they were preparing to form a revolutionary organisation after obtaining military training from the Liberation Tigers. Five of the arrested are members of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and four of them are Sinhalese.

All suspects were brought to court under heavy security in a bus.

They have been detained in Boosa detention Camp in Galle since their arrest, sources said.

Senior Counsel Mr.K.S.Ratnavel appeared for the four Sinhala suspects who were arrested on allegation that they were supporters of the LTTE in its activities.

Senior Counsel Mr.S.Thevarajah Mr.Mahinda Jayawardene and Mr.E.Thambiah and Attorney-at-Law Mr.Tilak Wijesinghe appeared for nineteen Tamil suspects. President Counsel Mr.Daya Perera appeared for one suspect.

Additional Magistrate, Mr.Manjula Thilakaretna, refused an application made by the defence for a copy of the 'B" report furnished by the police to court when the suspects were first produced in court.

The Attorney General department was not represented in court.
