Delay allows poison to kill

A pregnant woman bitten by a poisonous insect died last night due to delay caused by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) at the Nagar Kovil checkpoint while being rushed to the Manthikai hospital.

The woman, Yogaraja Manjula, 28, was stung by an unidentified poisonous insect around 7 p.m. at her residence in Maamunai north in Sempiyan Pattu in Vadamaradchi east.

The SLA, however, refused to give permission to take her through the Nagar Kovil checkpoint until 8.30 p.m. despite pleas by relatives that her condition was critical.

Later she died on admission to the Manthikai hospital at 9.30 p.m. said medical sources.
