Three college students surrendered at HRC office in Jaffna Tuesday due to death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) backed paramilitaries amid recent escalation in the number of civilians including families in Jaffna peninsula seeking protection.
Two of the students aged 18, 19 from Mirusuvil, Thenmaraadchi escaped from their areas and jointly surrendered at the HRC Office. The third
student from Uduppiddy Kambarmalai, Vadamaraadchi surrendered separately. HRC officials have not yet decided whether the students are to be kept in protective custody in Jaffna prison or with social welfare organizations. Earlier, two families from Thenmaraadchi with three children aged under fifteen sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Monday due to similar threats from SLA and SLA-backed paramilitaries.
