12 Tamils arrested in Gampaha

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and police took 12 Tamil civilians into custody in Gampaha town in Colombo district Wednesday in a cordon and search operation. Police said the detainees were taken in for questioning as they failed to prove their identity and the reason for their stay in the location.
The detainees are being held at Gampaha police station and are being interrogated by the Terrorist Intelligence Division, sources said. Meanwhile, the Homagama police have extended the deadline for persons temporarily residing in Homagama and Kottawa divisions to register their names with respective police station till Thursday evening. Earlier the police directed these persons to register their names before the end of Wednesday or face arrest under the Emergency Regulations. Police said about 2000 persons are staying in Homagama and Kottawa police divisions temporarily. These persons have been directed to appear at respective police station with chief occupants. Majority of them are Tamils from other parts of the country, sources said.
