Two Mannar policemen shot

Two military-trained policemen were shot dead by the Liberation Tigers at noon today at the Hospital Road Mannar, Police said.

The two Policemen had driven a jeep from Mannar Hospital and stopped the vehicle opposite a tavern, when the shooting took place.

Two suspected Tigers are thought to have carried out the attack. The policeman driving the jeep was shot in his seat and the other was killed while standing near the vehicle.

Soon after the shootings they had been rushed to the hospital but attempts to save them failed police said.

The incident was reported to the district judge, M.Ilancheliyan, who visited the scene and the hospital is reported to have ordered the District Medical Officer to hold the post-mortem and release the bodies.
