Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops in large numbers surrounded Jaffna University
premises Wednesday afternoon in field-bikes and armoured troop carriers
while some tried to enter forcibly into certain sections of the
campus, disrupting the Annual Student Gathering at the Jaffna
University campus, student sources in Jaffna said.
Though the SLA troops tried to force entry into some sections of the University campus, they faces student protests and withdrew, according to student leaders. The SLA troops, however, conducted rigorous checking and search of all undergraduates who came out of the University premises. The representatives of Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) condemned the
SLA intrusion and intimidation as an infringement on their freedom, disrupting a normal event of the university. The Annual Student Get-together may have been misunderstood by the SLA as a student activity against the state, the sources said.
