Jaffna Co-operative Official hacked to death in Kaithadi

Unidentified armed men abducted Mr. Subramaniam, the president of Jaffna district Co-operative Societies Federation (CSF), from his house at Kaithadi Sunday midnight and hacked him to death at Kaithadi junction. Mr. Subramaniam was in charge of the distribution of essential food items, in stock and shipped into the peninsula, through the co-operative retail shops in Jaffna district.

Residents of Kaithadi found his body lying at Kaithadi junction Monday morning, and took the body to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary. Subramaniam, 59, the President of Kaithadi Multipurpose co-operative society is also the President of the Federation of Co-operative societies which represents various co-operative societies of consumers and cultivators. Subramaniam had attended to his duties at his office at Madaththadi junction in Jaffna town and had returned home Sunday evening. The killing of Subramaniam, a prominent person in the co-operative sector in Jaffna district, has shocked the co-operative sector and peninsula residents. Earlier, the President of Jaffna Co-operative Society, Karunakaran, was been shot dead. Many residents of Kaithadi have been abducted and killed allegedly by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and SLA-backed armed paramilitary members. Co-operative sector in Jaffna district plays an important and prominent part in the distribution of food and essential items and Subramaniam has been at the forefront of distribution activities.
