Tamil detainee files FR petition in Supreme Court

A Tamil resident of Wattala in Colombo district has filed a
fundamental rights (FR) violation petition in the Sri Lanka' Supreme
Court to declare that his arrest and detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) is illegal and to order his release. The petitioner Rajendran Yogaraj, 49, has cited the Director of the
Terrorist Intelligence Division of the Sri Lanka Police, Defence
Ministry Secretary and Attorney General as respondents.
The TID officials arrested the petitioner on suspicion on 14.09.2007
that he helped to import walkie-talkie equipments for LTTE. Yogarah has been kept in detention from that date. A police officer of the TID Lalith
Hewawitharane was also arrested related to the same incident and is being kept in detention, according to the petition. The petitioner has stated that he has no connection with any terrorist organization and has not assisted any illegal organization.
