The Colombo High Court last Thursday allowed bail for the two suspects
arrested following the assassination of Lakshman Kadirgamar, the former
foreign minister of Sri Lanka, after two and a half years in remand. The suspects
were taken into custody alleging that the two suspects from the upcountry had come to Colombo fifteen days before the date of crime and they were taking photograph after the killing, legal sources said.
Sri Lankan soldiers who were on duty at Lakshman
Kadirgamar's house on the day of the incident arrested the suspects
while taking photographs of the deceased house and handed them to the
Cinnamon Garden Police for further inquiry. Senior counsel for the suspects Appathurai Vinayagamoorthy urged the
court to release his clients on bail, as there was no evidence to
implicate them with the murder or taking photographs of the deceased
house. State counsel appearing on behalf of the Attorney General did
not object the bail application. High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara released each suspect on cash
bail of one hundred thousand rupees and on surety bail of one million
rupees.
