Youth shot dead in Koappaay

Unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike pursuing a Tamil youth riding another motorbike along Raja Veethi, Koappaay, towards Jaffna town Saturday night, sprayed the youth with bullets near Heroes Cemetary in Koappaay and fled from the scene. The youth succumbed to his injuries, sources said.

The victim’s body was identified by his wife as Francis Rohan, 26, from Chulipuram.

Rohan had gone to visit his relatives in Koappaay East when he was gunned down by the assailants.

There were no eye witnesses for the killing.

After the victim’s body was recovered by Kiraama Cheavakar (Grama Sevaka, the village officer) Saturday night, Koappaay police were notified who later handed over the body tp Jaffna Teaching hospital for postmortem examination.

The motive for the killing is not known and Koappaay police have commenced investigations.
