Government officials return from Vanni

The government officials who visited the areas controlled by the Liberation Tigers in the Vanni, on a two day fact finding mission, returned to Colombo yesterday night.

The government officials visited various parts of the Vanni in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu districts and had discussions with officials representing government and non governmental organisations, regarding the general situation of the region.

Unconfirmed reports said that they met representatives of the Liberation Tigers and had extensive discussions on the current situation in the Vanni.

They also had discusions with displaced people in various places in the Vanni, including representatives of those displaced from Oddusudan who are currently staying in Puthukudiyeruppu.

Nearly 14,000 were displaced from Oddusuddan, a village recently captured by the Sri Lankan Army by the operation 'Ravi Bala'.

During their visit to Mannar they met the Bishop of Mannar and government officials. They had discussions regarding the situation both in the army controlled as well as the LTTE controlled areas.

Political sources said that the outcome of the visit is expected to be made public through a statement after the report is submitted to the President, Chandrika Kumarathunge.

N.Obadage, Commissioner General of Essential Services (CGES) and chairman of Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority for North (RRAN) and Dr.David Ratnavel, chairman of the Presidential Task Force of Human Disaster Management are the two government officials who visited the Vanni.
