4 prisoners shot dead in Kuruwita prison

Four prisoners were shot dead by prison guards Tuesday around 6:20 p.m. when a group of prisoners remanded at Kuruwita prison in Sabragamuwa province attempted to escape from the prison. Three prisoners were injured, Prison Chief Major General (retd) Vajira Gunawardene told media.

Prisoners were first warned not to leave the prison. But they did not heed the warning and attempted to flee. Thereafter prison guards opened fire on them, killing four on the spot and injuring three.
