East provincial council election which is scheduled to be held on May 10 will not be postponed except for a natural calamity, declared Dayananda Dissanayake, Commissioner of Elections at a conference held Tuesday at the office of the Department of Elections with representatives of registered political parties, according to media sources.
"I have no intention of postponing the election for any other reason other than natural disaster. I have no power to postpone the election for any other reason. I seek the assistance of all political parties to complete the task," Dayananda Dissanayake said. He requested party representatives that propaganda activities and meetings should not be held beyond 6 p.m. daily. Stern action would be taken against parties that violate this condition, he cautioned. The Commissioner of Elections agreed to the request made by party representatives to invite monitors from foreign countries to supervise east election. Inspector General of Police Victor Perera also participated in the discussion, sources said.
