A mother, with her 9-year-old daughter, sought protection Friday with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and SLA-backed paramilitaries, sources in Jaffna said.
The mother, 44, is a resident of Thamotharampi'l'lai Veethi, Changkaththaanai in Chaavakachcheari, Thenmaraadchi. HRC officials took steps to place the woman and her daughter in the Kurunakar Rehabilitation Centre through Jaffna Magistrate Court. The said mother was subjected to sexual harassment when she happened to be alone at home, the sources added. Incidents of sexual harassment and violation on women in Thenmaraadchi allegedly by SLA troops and SLA backed-paramilitaries have escalated in the recent past causing many of them to seek protection with Jaffna HRC, Women’s Rights Organizations in Colombo said. Many women with their children, from Thenmaraadchi, have been already placed in Kurunakar Rehabilitation Centre by HRC Jaffna.
