The remains of Maheswari Velayutham, the advisor of EPDP leader Douglas Devananda, shot and killed Tuesday, was flown to Colombo in a special aircraft with security arrangements Wednesday around 7.30 p.m, along with her family members and relatives, sources in Jaffna said. Her remains will be interred in Borella Saiva crematorium Thursday, the sources added.
Tension prevailed in Vadamaraadchi, where the killing took place. SLA forbid the public to use roads in the area close to Ms Velayutham's house in Navi'ndil until 8:30 a.m Wednesday. Public transport in the area has returned to normalcy, but people kept to their houses instead of venturing out to attend matters. Pedastrians and others attending to personal business in Nelliyadi and Point Pedro Wednesday morning were rounded up by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and made to assemble in the main playing fields, temples and theatre halls for interrogation and kept detained for long hours. Students on their way to participate in inter-school athlectic meet too were denied permission to go beyond Vallai by the SLA. They were sent back to their schools. Inquires into the death was conducted before the remains of the victim was flown to Colombo.
