[TamilNet, Tuesday, 20 May 2008, 07:26 GMT]
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that its newly elected councilor to the East Provincial Council would function as a neutral member without supporting the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UNP) or the United National Party-Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (UNP-SLMC) combine, party sources said in Colombo.
JVP leadership said in Colombo that its one member in the EPC would not lend his support to ruling or opposition parties in administering the council. The JVP contested the three districts, Ampaarai, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee in the eastern province and secured only one seat in the Trincomalee district. His name is Wimal Piyatissa. UPFA has 20 seats including two bonus seats, UNP-SLMC combine 15 seats, JVP-01 and Democratic National Tamil Alliance (DNTA)-1 in the newly elected 37 member EPC.
