A petition challenging the result of the Ampaa'rai district in the east provincial council election held on May 10 was filed in the Court of Appeal Wednesday by two main contenders who contested on behalf of the main opposition United National Party (UNP).
The petitioners Hassan Ali of the SLMC and the chief candidate of the UNP in Ampaa'rai district and Daya Gamage of the UNP have cited twenty respondents including the Commissioner of Election, Ampaa'rai District Government, Ministers A.M.Athaullah and Punchinilame, legal sources said. Attorney-at-Law G.G.Arulpiragasam filed the petition on behalf of the petitioners. Petitioners have prayed that the court should annul the results of the Ampaa'rai district in the eastern Provincial Council election held on May 10 citing reasons that several malpractices had taken place on the day of the poll. Several government ministers had engaged in thuggery on the polling day threatening the voters.
