About three hundred and eleven thousand patients have been treated in the Mullaithivu hospital, during the last year ending December 20 said sources at the Department of Health. The hospital was relocated to the Peripheral Unit hospital building at Puthukudiyeruppu in the district several years ago.
Mullaithivu hospital was relocated in 1990 due to a major military operation carried out by the Sri Lankan security force in the Mullaithivu area. Since then the hospital has been functioning at Puthukudiyeruppu hospital with restricted facilities, said DoH sources. There is a shortage of medical, nursing and other personnel in the hospital, they added. Sources said that 261,394 patients were treated in the OPD (Out Patient Department) and 15,748 patients in wards for various diseases. One thousand eight hundred and seven surgeries had been done while 205 eye patients and 8491 dental cases were treated. Sources said that 186 deaths and 1879 births had been registered in this hospital during this period.
