Janaka Perera to be UNP defense spokesman

The main United National Party (UNP) leadership has decided to appoint Major General (retd) Janaka Perera as the defense spokesman of the party. Janaka Perera, after retirement from the Sri Lanka Army, served as the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia and Indonesia. Informed sources further said that the party had also decided to name him as its candidate for the post of Chief Minister for the North Central Provincial Council.

The decisions were made during the UNP political affairs committee meeting on Friday. The formal announcement of these appointments is to be made this week, party sources said.

Janaka Perera is also to be appointed as the UNP chief organizer for Maharagama electorate in the Colombo district.

The NCPC elections are scheduled to be held in the first week of August.
