A Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) operative posing as a member of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been robbing a number of residences of nearly 1.5 million rupees during the past month within Kalmunai police division in Ampaarai, sources said.
The culprit is identified as Kanthasamy Puspharajah. Though Kalmunai police and Special Task Force (STF) troops have conducted joint cordon and search operations in Paandiruppu, Neelaavanai, and Kalmunai no arrests have been made. Meanwhile, another TMVP operative, Clinton, from Batticaloa district in charge of Aalaiyadiveambu, Akkaraippattu, in Ampaarai district is said to have been abducted by unidentified men operating from a white van about six days ago. Inyabharathy, Ampaarai district area TVMP coordinator, had recently summoned Clinton for investigation regarding alleged link with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Clinton, traveling on a motor bicycle, was disarmed at Akkaraippattu Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp, and while standing near the camp, was abducted in a white van. The abduction took place shortly after gun shots were heard, local residents said. The incident occurred in a SLA-controlled area where joint road patrols are being conducted jointly by SLA troops, police personnel, and STF commandos, 24-hours a day.
