Sources said over 5000 families have been affected by the recent rains and floods in areas not controlled by the Sri Lankan Government. The Social Service Department has informed the Districts Secretaries in these districts that the funds could not be allocated without obtaining permission from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Fourteen schools in the Kilinochchi district are currently being used to house flood victims there. Educational Department authorities said that these schools could begin functioning after other alternative shelters are provided to the displaced. Social Service Department has released 5.7 million rupees as relief funds to 8 districts affected by the floods.
