Trinco UC officials transferred
[TamilNet, Thursday, 21 January 1999, 18:26 GMT]
Four important officials of the Trincomalee Urban Council (UC) received today sudden notices of their transfer with effect from February 1, 1998. They are the superintendent of works, Mr F.G.A Gnanamuttu, chief clerk of the council N.Sivapalatharmakulasingham, book keeper of the UC, Ms. S.Gnanathevi and Revenue inspector M.R.G Ragunathan.
Tamil political sources in Trincomalee said that the sudden transfers were a manifestation of a move by the Sri Lankan government to get rid of an elected Tamil dominated council in the eastern port town so that it can proceed unobstructed with its plan to Sinhalise this strategic part of the island's northeastern province. This was reflected in the proceedings of the port town's Urban Council meeting today. "Is the government planning to run the Trinco UC under a special commissioner instead of holding elections ? " asked Mr.P Sooriyamoorthy today upon tabling his response to the governor's show cause notice of January 7. "That the governor should deem it fit to send complaints that were made against me in Jan. last year at this juncture makes me wonder whether this is connected to an attempt to do away with an elected Urban Council for Trincomalee" the chairman said.
