SLA checks more than 10,000 during Batticaloa curfiew

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and the police searched and checked more than 10,000 Tamils , 4,000 houses and more than 50% of the vehicles in Batticaloa district, during the joint search launched, clamping a 12-hour police-curfew Saturday, Police media spokesman, Ranjith Gunesekara said.

Around 127 persons, mostly from out stations and Internally Displaced Persons from Paduvaankarai due to SLA offensives, staying with relatives, were detained for interrogation for not possessing National Identity Cards.

107 of the above detainees were released Sunday evening, the police said.

The police imposed curfew completely disrupted normalcy of life in Batticaloa district as police, SLA soldiers and Special Task Force commandos forced people of all ages and gender in various places in Batticaloa district to gather in public places for rigorous checking and interrogation, the sources said.

14 persons arrested in Vaazhaichcheanai and Kalkudaa area were released on personal bail when produced before the Acting Magistrate of Vaazhaichcheanai court.
