Family man seeks protection, another reported missing, with Jaffna HRC

[TamilNet, Thursday, 15 January 2009, 15:53 GMT]
A father of four children and a carpenter by profession from Aanaikkoaddai in Valikaamam sought protection to his life with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office as unidentified gunmen had tried to abduct him on 13 January from his residence during Sri Lanka Army (SLA) imposed curfew hours, according to the complaint lodged with HRC Thursday. Meanwhile, the wife of a three-wheeler driver registered a complaint with HRC Jaffna that her husband had gone missing since 30th October 2008 after leaving to Jaffna from Vavuniyaa.

The carpenter who sought protection with Jaffna HRC had recently returned from Doha where he had been employed.

Four armed men arrived Friday night during curfew hours on two motor cycles at his house.

Two of the gunmen had gone inside the house and attempted to abduct him while the other two had waited outside.

The carpenter had managed to escape from the abductors and had been hiding until he sought protection with Jaffna HRC, according to the complaint made to HRC.

The four armed men had smashed all things and furniture in the house before leaving.

Jeyamanohari, the wife of the three-wheeler driver who had gone missing in Vavyniyaa, said in her complaint that her husband, Suntharalingam Baskar, 30, had been held up in Ki’linochchi when the A9 road was closed by SLA.

He had come to Vavuniyaa on 30th October from Ki’linochchi and had gone missing when he was about to leave to Jaffna, she said in her complaint.
