[TamilNet, Saturday, 31 January 2009, 09:34 GMT]
Demanding a permanent ceasefire in Sri Lanka and the withdrawal of all Indian military aid to Colombo, leaders of the umbrella front in Tamil Nadu, Ilangkaith Thamizhar Paathukaappu Pearavai, which was recently formed to protect the Eezham Tamils, announced Saturday that they would mark the Sri Lankan Independence Day on February 4 as a day of protest. A state-wide bandh and a black-flag procession have been announced.
The umbrella front zeroed in on the date of February 4 in order to drive home the message that Sinhalese independence had translated into genocide of the Eezham Tamils. Representatives from major political parties, students movements, cine industry associations, trade unions, feminist organizations, fishermen, farmers and weavers associations, NGOs and the unorganized sector took part in the meeting which was held at Thiyagarayar Hall in T. Nagar, Chennai Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
