Coming closely on the heels of Muthukumar and Ravi's self-immolation, two more young men in Tamil Nadu attempted to kill themselves in order to draw the world's attention against India's proxy war in Sri Lanka.
Thamilvalavan, a 21-year-old Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi cadre, jumped from a 100-metre high telecommunications tower Sunday morning even as he shouted slogans condemning the Indian Government and asking the world to save Eezham Tamils. Another young man from Vellore set himself ablaze Saturday evening in order to draw the world's attention to the sufferings of Eelam Tamils. Thamilvalavan (a) Dheenadayalan, was the Aalambaakkam camp secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). At around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, he had climbed the 100-ft high Reliance mobile phone telecommunications tower and had raised slogans against the Indian Government and in support of Tamil Eelam. Even as he was climbing the tall structure, the people of the village had gathered below and begged him to reconsider his decision. Thamilvalavan's friends tried to climb the tower in order to prevent him from jumping to death. He paid no heed and jumped down. According to reports in Tamil media, he has sustained multiple fractures and grievous injuries. Because of several broken bones, Thamilvalavan has been transferred to Chennai for treatment. Another young man from Vellore also attempted to kill himself by setting himself ablaze. He has also been admitted to hospital after sustaining serious burn injuries.
