PA ally calls for fresh elections

The Leader of the United Lalith Front, Mrs Srimani Athulathmudali in a statement issued today said:"I believe that the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge would win the confidence of the voters if she were to ask the Governor of the Wayambe to dissolve the newly elected north western provincial council and call for fresh elections".

She appealed to the leaders of the two major political parties, the opposition United National Party and the ruling People's Alliance to take disciplinary against those worked against the principles of the parties and to take strong action against those who perpetrated election violence.

To end the power struggle between the two major political parties, Mrs Srimani Athulathmudali strongly urged the government to bring changes in the Sri Lankan constitution on the lines of Austrian constitution which enables power sharing after a general election between the winning and the losing parties.

The United Lalith Front, which is an ally of the People’s Alliance, gave full support to the PA candidates at the scandal-ridden Wayamba poll after the differences of opinion arose between the ULF's leader Mrs Srimani Authlathmudali and President Chandrika were amicably settled.
