SLA launch search in Jaffna University surroundings

Tension mounted around Jaffna University as large number of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and police conducted an intensive search and checking operation from 6:30 a.m Tuesday in front of the entrances of University hostels and the faculties located along Aadiyapaatham road and Parameasvara junction in Jaffna, disrupting normalcy in the activities of the university, sources in Jaffna said. SLA arrested a Management Faculty student at the entrance of the hostel around 6:30 a.m but brought him and released him at the place of arrest after an hour, Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) said.
The armed forces posted at the entrances of the Medical, Agriculture faculties at Aadiyapaatham road and the other faculties and hostel located around Parameasvara junction minutely checked the National Identity Cards (NICs) of all the students entering and leaving the buildings. The soldiers and the police, however, did not enter the University campus during the intensive checking, University administration said. The searching troops had a list of the details of the registrations of the students with the university, checking it for information during the search. No one except the student released earlier had been arrested until afternoon. Tension prevails among the students as the search continues, the sources added.
