'Cancel NWP polls' - Buddhist Council
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 10 February 1999, 20:08 GMT]
The National Sangha Council has called for the cancellation of the scandal-ridden Wayamba provincial council election held last month in which the ruling party, People's Alliance won 33 seats out of 52.
About two hundred Buddhist monks of the National Sangha Council today went in a procession from Colombo Town Hall to the official residence of the Prime Minister and handed over a memorandum to Mrs Srimavo Bandaranaike. In that memorandum, the Council appealed to the Prime Minister to take steps to cancel the Wayamba poll results and to appoint an 'independent' Election Commission. The National Sangha Council is of opinion that the present election system should be replaced with a suitable system for the country. The government should take immediate steps to prevent all malpractices, acts of violence and thuggery by all political parties, it said.
