Jaffna food produces to be sent to South

Jaffna Government Agent (GA) informed Wednesday that 9 lorries will take a consignment of local food produces including dried fish, onions, beetroot and prawns to South Sri Lanka Thursday through A9 land route. Fisheries society sources expressed concern that this arrangement will raise the price of fish that is in heavy demand in the peninsula, affecting the consumers. The GA, however, said that this measure is being taken to increase marketing opportunities for the local products.

48,250 gm onions, 1,300 kg beetroot, 5,000 kg prawns and 5,000 kg dried fish are to be sent to the south Thursday.

9 lorries of the 22 that brought food commodities to Jaffna peninsula from Vavuniyaa Tuesday will be taking the local food products Thursday.

Dried food items for relief supply from the Commissioner of Essential Services were brought in 20 lorries while 2 carried fruits to private traders in the peninsula.
