Teacher, student die as tree falls on outdoor classroom

A teacher and one of her female students were killed and 30 students sustained injuries when a tree fell on them while the teacher was conducting an outdoor class at Thiru Gnana Sampanthan Mixed School, Vavuniyaa, Tuesday noon, Police said.

The victims, 12-year-old girl Subashini and her female teacher Kadirgamathamby Rahini, 30, were killed instantly and around 30 other students were injured when a tree collapsed on their out door class in Vavuniya on Tuesday afternoon, police and hospital officials said.

The outdoor class for grade 7 was conducted under the tree within the school premises in front of its main building.

The wounded were rushed to Vavuniyaa hospital.

Ms. Rahini is a native of Karaveddi, Jaffna.
