Governor to hear NGO's difficulties
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 16 February 1999, 22:09 GMT]
A delegation of the Consortium of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) of the Trincomalee district is to meet the Governor of the North East Province on February 22 morning.
The delegation will brief the Governor on the difficulties and other shortcomings faced by the NGOs in carrying out their work with affected people in the Trincomalee district. The North East Governor, Major General Asoka Jayawardne, last week agreed to meet a delegation of the Consortium this morning at his office. Due to unforseen circumstances this meeting has now been postponed to next Monday. About twenty four NGOs are functioning in the Trincomalee district. At present the NGOs are involved in various activities to such an extent that many people have become dependent on the services provided by these organisations. Meanwhile, the North East Provincial (NEP) Administration considerd a proposal to prepare a charter for NGOs in the North east province and strengthening the activities of these organisations. A suggestion has been submitted for the formation of a consortium of NGOs working in the province and to function under a general Charter prepared and proclaimed by the consortium itself, provincial council sources said. The NEP is also considering another proposal to establish a network of NGOs at the provincial level, one NGO official said.
