Sinhalese men armed with guns and swords descending on Tamil rubber plantation workers in Monaragala district fired at random on the workers sheds, seriously wounding eleven of them on Tuesday and Wednesday, Monaragala police who had arrested two Sinhalese youths involved in the incident, said. The wounded Tamil estate workers are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Monaragala government hospital.
Following the killing of twelve Sinhala villagers in Buttala in two separate incidents by unidentified armed men Saturday and Monday, a Sinhalese youth had come to the Tamil estate workers and threatened all of them to leave. The Tamil youths in the houses had got together and chased the Sinhalese youth away. The youth had returned with the gang of Sinhalese armed men who opened fire on the estate workers’ houses. The terrified Tamil estate workers in their hundreds had fled away seeking safety in the nearby jungles.
