Police patrol ambushed[TamilNet, Saturday, 15 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]The Liberation Tigers ambushed a Sri Lankan police patrol yesterday. Three military policemen were killed in the attack which took place near Thoppur. It is not known if there were any LTTE casualties. The Sri Lankan military has had to significantly reduce its numbers in the east of the country in order to mass sufficient troop numbers for its offensive in the Vanni. Holding operations in the east have therefore largely fallen to the Sri Lankan police in the area. Sri Lankan police units in the east operate as soldiers. Armed with similar small arms, they are deployed in combat patrols against the LTTE and also man military defences. The police force, along with the rest of the Sri Lankan military is overwhelmingly Sinhalese.
