Emergency extension motion to be moved in parliament Tuesday

A motion to extend the State of Emergency is to be moved in the Sri
Lanka’s Parliament Tuesday for the first time after the
defeat of LTTE in the war front. The State of Emergency was introduced
on August 12, 2005. Thereafter it is being extended with the
permission of parliament every month, parliamentary sources said.
However at the last session of the parliament, Leader of the House and
Senior Minister, Nimal Sripala de Silva in reply to the main
opposition United National Party (UNP) said the State of Emergency
would continue even after the defeat of LTTE till the security forces
complete their search and mopping up operations for LTTE cadres who
are reported to be hiding in jungles and for hidden arms in liberated
areas, sources said. Meanwhile Dr.Thomas Thangathurai William is expected to take oaths as
new MP on behalf of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for Ampaa'rai
district when the parliament meets Tuesday to fill the vacancy created
with the death of Kanagasabai Pathmanathan. Mr.Nandimithra
Ekanayake is also to take oath as new MP for the Matale district from
the main opposition United National Party (UNP) list to fill the
vacancy created with the death of Alick Aluwihare.
