Fishing ban lifted in East coast sea
[TamilNet, Monday, 15 June 2009, 12:44 GMT]
Fishing ban and restriction in the eastern coast sea in force for more
than two decades has been lifted with immediate effect. Presidential
Senior Advisor and parliamentarian Mr. Basil Rajapakse Sunday informed
the fisheries associations in the districts of Trincomalee and
Batticaloa that fishing is allowed through out day and night in
eastern cost without any restriction.
Fishermen are now allowed to use 25 Horse Power engine fitted fishing
crafts for fishing. Basil Rajapaksa issued the instruction to this
effect Sunday with the approval of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Till
Sunday fishermen in the eastern districts were allowed shore fishing
limited hours in the early morning and deep sea fishing was not
allowed due to 'security' reason.
