Netherlands Government funds resettlement programme

The Netherlands Government has granted Rs 75 million for a resettlement scheme through which 3,000 houses will be constructed in the Trincomalee district. Of this amount, 15 million rupees has already been released to the National Housing Development Authority to commence the project, NHDA sources said.
The three thousand houses have been divided equally among the three communities and the beneficiaries have been selected from nine divisional secretariat areas in the Trincomalee district. No one has been selected from the Eechilampattai division in the Muttur area and Padavi-Sripura division in the Trincomalee area. Each beneficiary will be given a grant of Rs:25,000/-, in three stages and construction has to be completed before September 1999. Each community will get one thousand houses, Housing Authority officials said. The Netherlands signed the agreement for the development aid with the Sri Lankan Government after choosing Trincomalee as the most suitable district in which to start the resettlement programme.
