CES allows 142 Jaffna lorries to transport goods to South

Jaffna Government Agent informed that some of the Southern lorry owners who had registered their vehicles to transport essential goods from South to Jaffna through A9 route have been taken off the registration list, in a press release Saturday. The press release further said that the Commissioner of Essential Services (CES) has granted permission to 142 Jaffna lorry owners to transport goods from Jaffna to South.

Though 854 Southern lorry owners had registered their vehicles to transport essential goods to Jaffna with the CES some of them had not come forward to transport the goods in the last minute due to fear of insecurity, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

The GA had cancelled the permits of the lorry owners who had failed to offer their service, the sources said.

Meanwhile, GA said in his press release that 40 lorries bring essential goods to Jaffna from the South daily along the A9 route.

Though 180 Jaffna traders had registered their vehicles with the CES to transport goods to South only 142 of them have now been given permission to take goods from Jaffna through the A9 route.

The reason for not permitting the rest 38 lorry owners was not given.

Jaffna traders have long been requesting for permission from CES but had not been allowed to transport goods from Jaffna in their lorries.
