Four hundred babies are born every month in the internment camps at Menik Farm where nearly 300,000 Tamil civilians are held in
Vavuniya district, and they are in need of considerable assistance and
care, according to Sarvodaya leader Dr A. T. Ariyaretna. He presented the statistics when he was making a commemorative address in honour of Mother Theresa of Calcutta, at the SEDEC centre, Colombo Saturday.
Mr. Ariyaretna said that Sarvodaya movement was able to put together
and supply some 800 cots for the infants in a short period of time,
although the initial requirement was 400 cots at the request of the
health authorities at the Menik Farm. "If Mother Theresa were alive today, she would have rushed to the IDP
camps in Vavuniyaa to help the inmates there," he said. The event was organized by the Christian Association for Social Action.
