Bishop Monsvlovnni Battista from Italy and Bishop John Stanley Arnold and Bishop John Anthony Rawsthrone from the United Kingdom (UK) during the weekend visited the camps in the Menik farm and in Cheddiku'lam in Vavuniyaa where hundreds of thousands internally displaced people are held. The Caritas of Sri Lanka had organized the visit.
These Bishops had visited the camps with the permission of the
Ministry of Defence. Sources said they had distributed artificial
limbs to those who were disabled by landmines and shelling. They had also monitored the relief work carried out by Caritas Sri Lanka in these camps. Caritas Sri Lanka is engaged in providing cooked meals to 100,000 displaced persons. The Bishops had also participated in a special mass at Madhu Church, together with Caritas Sri Lanka Director Fr. Damian Fernando, the Administrator of the Madhu shrine Fr. Desmond Kullas and the Vicar General of Mannar diocese Fr. Victor Soosai.
